Belper Marlin Club Championships 2005

Belper Marlin SC would like to thank it's members for taking part in the Club Championships 2005

Again this was one of the highlights of the year, with some top quality races, fast swims and excellent spirit. The large numbers of entrants gave the galas a real sense of occasion. On behalf of the swimmers, the promoters would like to thank all the parents that helped at the galas. Though we've said it a number of times it is worth repeating - these events could not take place without your continuing support.

All the results are now available in the links below, well done to all swimmers. Whether you scored 30 points or 1 point is not important. What is important is that you took part in a superb weekend, and that hopefully you achieved a Personal Best and can now set yourselves targets for the next 12 months.

Thanks to Bob at Rayal Trophies for once again supplying the trophies for the Club Championships. This year over £1200 pounds worth of trophies are up for grabs.

Everybody that took part in the Championships are invited to the Presentation evening that will take place on the evening of Sunday 11 December at the 'Nailers' bar at Belper Town Football Ground. Remember that this replaces the normal Sunday evening training session. All of the trophies from the Championships will be presented, plus a number of other awards and certificates. Arrive at 6:30 pm for a 7:00 pm start to the Presentations. No dress code, just wear what you are comfortable in, but we will be taking group photographs for the website.

Will your name be on one of these trophies?

Anybody who still has one of the perpetual trophies should return them NOW to the Trophy secretary Peter Marshall.

Gala report Saturday.
An excellent first gala of the championships saw 23 new Championship Best Times set. Attendence was very pleasing, with very few empty lanes. Also an excellent turn-out of parents meant all the jobs were filled, with a full compliment of 12 Timekeepers and 6 judges to ensure fair competition.

Unluckiest swimmer of the night must be Rhianna Mills, who was given 2nd place by 1/100th of a second in both of her events. But with 10 points from the 2 events she is joint leader in her age-group and no doubt will be determined to go one better in Sunday's gala.

It seems that the atmosphere inspired you, with no fewer than 137 PB's out of the 160 swims, a PB rate of over 85% - wow! Also 23 new Championship Best Times were recorded, these are indicated by CBT after the swimmers name in the results.

Gala report Sunday.
The superb atmosphere continued into Sunday, inspiring the swimmers to some more excellent races. 33 more CBTs were set, and another 173 updates needed to the PB list. That makes 310 in total for the weekend out of 411 swims, so a 75% PB rate. Anybody fancy taking over the PB list? Thought not.

Highlights included the 11 yr Girls 50m freestyle, where only a second and a half covered the first 5 swimmers, a nightmare for the Placing Judges. Also the mens Open 100m Freestyle saw an excellent contest between the 2 fastest swimmers in the club.

It was pleasing to see the impressive turnout from the Masters section, in their first club championships for about half of them. It just shows you're never too old to learn, it could be you on the blocks next December? Thanks to Alison and Kirsty for swimming in the Ladies Masters events - the first entrants in these events for a few years and so making a full competition.

Also the courage, determination and ability of the swimmers from the Disabilities section drew much applause from the appreciative on-lookers.

Photo Competition
Three correct answers have been received so far for the Mystery Marlins below. (From Mick Howard, Jeff Pickering and Chris Jackson) There is a clue in the caps the lads are wearing, a different style to the caps worn in recent years. We think the photograph was taken at the Club Champs 1993. A final clue - for one of the swimmers you need look no further than the Home Page.
